Costa Ballina Golf Course:
Designed by Spanish golfer Jose Maria Olazabal, Costa Ballena Golf Course is a challenge for golfers of all abilities. The club boasts 27 holes (3 x 9 holes, each named after the type of tree that flanks the 9 hole layout) plus a 9 hole true-par-3 course and offers a great range of Spanish golf holiday options.
Spread over a 100 hectare site running alongside the Atlantic coast, this course is in keeping with the natural landscape and enhances the beauty of the local environment.
The first 18 holes are played between the Atlantic Ocean and the soft plains of the interior. The par 72, 6215m design stretches over an area of
exceptional beauty flanked by sand dunes, gentle slopes and four large lakes which come into play on many holes. Holes 19 - 27 are located to the East of the first 18 and are designed to complement the entire golf resort.
The Costa Ballena Golf Club was proud to host recent semi finals (2005 & 2006) of the European Tour Qualifying School. The resort has been rubber-stamped by many National PGA organisations, particularly those from Scandinavean countries and when you see the practice facilites you will understand why. The largest driving range in Europe at over 350m wide with extensive views over the Atlantic is the centre-piece of the golf school, and is complemented by the par 3 course, putting green and practice green for chipping and bunker shots.
The Clubhouse and pro-shop is a luxurious place in which to relax after your round. Featuring a fully equipped gym, sauna, jacuzzi and more the locker room area is truly one of the best we have seen. The fully stocked pro-shop, smilingly run by a man named Jesus(!), is a great place to pick up those golf holiday bargains.
Sherry Golf Club:
It is amazing to think that Sherry Golf, Jerez only opened in 2004. It is so well designed into the local landscape that it looks like it has been here for far longer. Situated close to the city of Jerez, the course is an ideal location for your Spanish golfing break in combination with a city break in the wonderful cities of Jerez or Cadiz.
The 6572m, par 72 course designed by Stirling and Martin of the Global Golf Company runs up and down a long sloping area and features many beautiful lakes, views over the sherry-
growing vineyards and bunkers which include one in the shape of a horses head in reference to the world famous performing horses of the region.
The course has already hosted many professional and amateur tournaments and is proud to host the forthcoming Spanish Mens Amateur Tournament. The greens and fairways are always in immaculate condition, and you are highly unlikely to fall victim to a bad bounce or other such problems commonly found on less well managed courses.
The typical Andalucian style clubhouse is a great place to enjoy that after-round meal and drink, and offers private dining facilities for larger groups, a spike bar, and a-la-carte restaurant. The locker rooms and pro shop are also well presented and equipped. A 911m par 3 course in addition to the usual driving range and other practice facilities is also available.
El Puerto Golf Club:
Situated in El Puerto de Santa Maria, the lower left hand point of the ‘sherry triangle’, Golf el Puerto is a fairly new addition to the golf offering in Cadiz province. It follows the traditional Spanish model of building a great golf course amongst discrete accommodation projects. As the course is situated on the outskirts of this historically important provincial town, they have plenty of room for both, resulting in a test of golf over 6300 metres long.
The course offers much more of an examination than simply a distance test however. Dog-legs, water (there are 9 lakes linked by streams) and bunkers make this admittedly flat course, designed by Spanish golf and Ryder Cup legend Manuel Pinero, a really interesting place to play.
Golf el Puerto is keen to establish itself as well renowned course in the area as quickly as possible. They are already competing with local neighbours such as Sherry Golf, Jerez and Costa Ballena GC for professional undercard and provincial tournaments and having recently poached the head green keeper from Valderrama, you wouldn’t bet against them succeeding in their ambitions. Indeed, they have already been selected by the Andalucian Golf Federation as the headquarters for the Andalucian Tour and they have hosted the prestigious Copa de Andalucia. Expect a good course in great condition offering a well thought out test of golf with the wind in play on most days.
The clubhouse is clean and modern and offers everything you’d expect by way of facilties and the staff are friendly and courteous. This is a golfing and accommodation development that will grow in significance as time goes by and is well worth a round if staying in the Jerez/Cadiz area.
