GOLDEN EAGLE GOLF COURSE

Situated near Rio Maior, some 60 kilometres from Lisboa, the Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club is one of the newest jewels of Portuguese golf. Formerly access was restricted to members and their guests, but since August 1997 it is open to visitors.

Designed by the U.S. architect Rocky Roquemore, the course covers 90 hectares, and is framed by a landscape in which beautiful local flora and gentle pines, decorative eucalyptuses and acacias all stand out. Its design is typical of the modern U.S. school, which means target golf is the most important point. The course totals 6,200 metres of championship tees for a Par 72 (37+35).

On the first round, look out for hole 6, a Par 4 of 354 metres, in which the golfer has to hit the second shot over trees strategically placed in front of the fairway. On the second round, pay attention at hole number 10 (354 metres). Here, in order to get a Par 4, the player has to make a second shot over the water onto a not very deep green.

MONTADO GOLF COURSE

Close to Setubal, in a region with great opportunities for tourism amongst which golf is surely a highlight, the Montado course is surrounded by famous muscatel vineyards that were planted here more than a century ago. It was designed by the Portuguese Duarte Sottomayor, who began his career working with the famous Robert Trent Jones.

The course unfolds beneath old oaks and younger olive trees, chestnut and pines, planted when the course was first built, whilst around it wind creeks and natural lakes.

Some holes are unforgettable. Hole number 5, a Par 4 with a dogleg to the left, demands a good drive and for which the second shot is played onto a wide green protected by water. Another hole of great scenic beauty is number 13, a Par 4 that provides a great view over Palmela Castle and an excellent opportunity for a birdie.

On this course, the golfer is almost always offered two choices for playing the holes. The riskier option implies heavy penalties if the shot is not accurately hit.

ESTORIL GOLF COURSE

Internationally famous for its location near the luxurious beach resort of Estoril, the course was designed by Mackenzie Ross. However, a number of alterations have been made to its original layout.

The architect has made excellent use of the pine trees and eucalyptuses which, together with the uneven terrain, make this course challenging in terms of accuracy rather than distance.

It is a short course, covering 5,238 metres for a Par 69, providing an engrossing challenge. Its hole number 16 is internationally well known, a Par 3 of 184 metres.

The Estoril course hosted the Portuguese Open Championship between 1953 and 1972, and also in 1977 and 1987, as well as the Ladies Open in 1977, 1988 and 1997. It also hosted several non-Pro International Championships. For that reason famous golfers of the calibre of Ramon Sota, Max Faulkner, Seve Ballesteros, Bernard Gallagher and Peter Aliss and many others have played here.
