Mention east Cyprus and the name on most people’s lips is Ayia Napa. Famous for its mega-clubs and every-hour-is-happy-hour attitude, it’s on a par with Ibiza where nightlife is concerned. But away from the strip, its yacht-lined harbour, white sands and theme parks have made it a firm favourite with people looking for a neon-free break, too.
A mile or so from Ayia Napa is the popular resort of Nissi Beach. As its name suggests, the highlight here is the coastline. In fact, with pale sands, crystal seas and a little island you can swim out to, it’s pretty much beach perfection. There’s also a waterpark and plenty of restaurants to hand.
Head further north along the coast and you come to Protaras, or Fig Tree Bay to use its other name. This place gets a big thumbs up from families. The beach goes on for what seems like forever, and lines up every watersport you can think of. As for the town itself, expect round-the-clock entertainment, with everything from traditional restaurants to karaoke bars.
