“Big-league coral reefs and beaches that roll on for miles are what the Red Sea Riviera does best.”

You have to hand it to the Red Sea Riviera – it knows how to do great holidays, what with its beachfront hotels, white sands and desert scenery. Diving is where the Red Sea really leads the way, though. Beneath the waves you’ll find forests of coral, black-as-night canyons and a thousand-plus species of tropical fish.

There’s a great line-up of sandy resorts. Number one in the popularity stakes is Sharm El Sheikh on the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula. Home to 60 kilometres’ worth of beaches, it’s a modern resort where stylish hotels, shops and bars are the order of the day. Just across the Gulf of Suez is equally lively Hurghada. You’ll find all the holiday essentials here – a big beach, great hotels and international restaurants – along with mosques, bazaars and spice stalls.

To put the brakes on proper, try unhurried Marsa Alam. A relative newcomer on the scene, it’s the place to go for white sands, watersports and solitude. There’s just as much peace and quiet in Taba. Along with the all-important sweep of sand, you get beautiful mountain views and a championship golf course. And, as it’s close to Jordan’s border, visiting the Lost City of Petra is a cinch.
