“With its ancient cities, forgotten villages and 1,200-kilometre coastline, Tunisia is the place to get history and culture with a sea view.”
For a country smaller than the UK, Tunisia has a lot going on. There’s Middle Eastern promise in the form of mosques, hammams and medinas. And, thanks to the French, there are patisseries, belle époque buildings and boulevards, too. Then you’ve got the coastline – a never-ending ribbon of gold stretching all the way to Libya.
Pretty Hammamet is a good bet when it comes to picking a piece of the puzzle. It counts a long belt of sand, great fish restaurants, and three golf courses among its best features. South of here is upmarket Port El Kantaoui. Here, you get two beaches and a marina packed with shops, cafés and restaurants. The Medieval town of Sousse is equally good. The French cuisine here is certainly worth a note on a postcard home and the souk warrants a spending spree.
Head down the country and you can get the full desert-island deal in Djerba. It’s a newbie on the holiday scene, but it’s tipped for big things. It’s the long sandy beaches that those in the know are most excited about, closely followed by the cobbled lanes of Moorish capital, Houmt Souk.
