As is often the story of a now well-known holiday resort, Cambrils was once just a little sleepy fishing hamlet on Spain’s Costa Dorada. First discovered by the Spaniards themselves who came here on holiday (mostly to Salou first), Cambrils came into its own when the fishermen brought in their catch and the holidaymakers came to watch! A very raucous fish auction takes place every week on the quayside, so this became a bit of a tourist attraction and the locals played to the gallery! The next door neighbour of Salou, the two resorts could hardly be more different. Cambrils holidays centre around the small harbour front with open air cafes and local fish restaurants and a few trendy bars, but really Cambrils is still a local fishing village at heart.
Lying only a few km along the coast from Salou, easily traversed by local buses which run pretty regularly (about every 15 minutes) in high season, Cambrils is like a world away. Still holding that local vibe, the little resort has grown to cater for the visitor, but it is not so commercial as Salou and the atmosphere is much more relaxed and casual. The harbour front is the main attraction and local bars and cafes cuddle together to provide the sustenance necessary to tolerate a day’s enjoyment. If you’re a foodie, enjoy the fresh fish and seafood and smile at the prices as you eat….
